In the 1850’s there was a movement to establish a true steeplechase and revive what some saw as the golden sporting age of steeplechasing in the 1830’s. “Fog” Rowlands and others thought of establishing a race “to encourage farmers to breed high class horses” and it was hoped that farmers and hunting men would ride in it.
